in my experience (40+ years in
IT, one of the first ARPAnet users outside of the military), it
is these days the case that bottom-posters are usually the most guilty
of failure to prune.

As one who subscribes to more than 75 lists of various natures and receives an average of in excess of 300 emails a day, top posters are clearly least likely to prune at all.

It is this very fact that has led to the increase
in top-posters.

Not likely most responsible. Email client compose windows that by default dump the cursor at the top instead of below the quote clearly induce the practice. Are there any email clients remaining that by default place the compose cursor below the quote?

They are not perverse, they are simply completely
p1ss@d off with having to scroll through hundreds of lines of recycled
dross in order to read, at the very end "+1".

Too bad listserves don't automatically bounce unpruned replies. Regardless whether perpetrated by top posters or bottom posters, complete absence of pruning is a scourge.
