I'm putting it together on a budget - shopping for the best prices and using
parts from an older computer. For about $1100 I purchased a dual socket
motherboard, 2 i7-920 chips, 12 gig DDR3 memory and 2 cpu coolers. I
already have a case with power supply, and all the other stuff to have an
up and running machine. So you should easily be able to put together a
complete octal from scratch for about 1500 with everything - assuming you
don't need the very best peripherals. My primary use of this machine is
chess (and go) so I don't need high end graphics for instance and I don't
need a big expensive hard drive.

One hidden cost is the OS if you want windows - that and many other things
are built into the price of every machine you purchase from a store but of
course I'm a hard core Linux user. But even with Windows you can save a
lot by building it yourself.

If you do this pay attention to the cpu cooling unit. I'm using a
motherboard that fits into a standard ATX case and I understand that space
is tight and not just any pair of coolers will fit. I did some research to
find a set of coolers that are not overly expensive but high quality and
will fit. If anyone is interested I'll give you the parts list, but
let me first make sure it all works together and I'll give you my report.
I have everything now except the motherboard which should be coming today.
