It sounds like i7 will be superior to Core2 for heavy playouts, but for
light playouts the jury is still out?

Is this self-build? How much budget do you need to make a fast 8-core
machine at the moment? What about 12 or 16-core?

And, does anyone know of companies selling workstations with 16 cores?
The high-end gaming machines don't go that far. I can find server
machines but I'd be paying a premium for reliability and rack-mount and
hard-drive slots. And I expect a workstation to be whisper-quiet,
whereas machines destined for a data centre can drown out a vacumn cleaner.
