I just completed a Vala version. It took over 5 hours because I don't know Vala and the documentation sucks. There is a nice tutorial to give the basics, but when it comes to specific things like substring and array copy, coverting a string to an integer, and so on, I cannot find any information easily.
So I ended up writing my own routines in some cases that probably already exist. I can try to improve it later.
