Just my two cents,

You said they didn't explain themselves. They did. Security breach.
And my bet is they do want to be extra sure that none of this is going to happen any time soon because - you are a prime example - people get pissed. That's normal if you're dependent on them and I do think you got every right to complain about the long downtime, but your facts are off. As stated, they did explain themselves, what else do you want to know? Do you really care what is actually going on behind the scenes to tighten the security? Or what they do change in their infrastructure or do you actually only care how long it will take to be back online?

If they would know an exact time my bet it, they would tell everybody. Like right now :)
