Topping lift for spin pole

If you’re racing, you may well use both spin halyards, such as doing a peel.  I would not suggest using a spin halyard for raising a genoa on a furler.  The angle will be wrong at the top.  Serious racers don’t have furlers, but instead a headfoil with two grooves.  The second groove allows raising a headsail (such as a no. 3) while the first one (say a no. 1) is still up.  This way you avoid a bare foretriangle while changing headsails.  You can’t do this with a furler, making a second genoa halyard largely unnecessary.  You could use a spin halyard to raise a second headsail without a furler, but again the angle will not be optimum at the top.

Clear as mud?

So since there are 2 spinnaker halyards, would I only use one to raise the spinnaker and just choose which one to use? Then the other one would be used for a foredeck sail swap while the spinnaker is up? Also, would the second sail be raised on the furler as well?

Why is there two different halyards for the spinnaker anyway?

Thanks for your help, Oden

O our 33-ll there’s are 3 forward halyards, 1 centre halyard for the jib, and 2 wing halyards for the spinnaker . You can also use 1 to do a head sail swap …. Foredeck crew needs to be sharp and keep track of the halyards so they don’t get crossed.

Hi Everyone,

We are currently trying to assemble the mast (My son Oden and myself), but we are not exactly sure where everything goes and what everything is for, lol. A lot was disassembled when the boat was trucked from Buffalo and we are familiarizing ourselves with this rig.

I have three lines coming out of the top of my mast facing the bow, and I was wondering if anyone knows what they are all for? The one in the middle is for the jib halyard, but I am not sure about the other two. Spinnaker?

I am also wondering about the spinnaker setup for this mast. Is there supposed to be a block at the top of the mast for the spinnaker? And does the spinnaker halyard run on the outside of the mast, or does it go through the inside?

I can get more photos too and we're back at the boat now.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Noah and Oden
