What year(s) separates "older" from "newer?"

I have a 1978 26' and from my casual observation of the existing I'd assume
it's newer. It's a back-burner project, but eventually it'll need
replacing.

Years ago I had to replace rubber in a fleet of special-built 20-foot
Persons for a disable sailing program here in Miami. I used a heat gun to
warm 2 to 3-foot sections as I worked it into place. I think I'd do that
over the boiling water method.
