I was the delivery skipper taking Enterprise from New York to Venice, Fl. Ed
had had the engine stall when using it a day or two before our departure, and
the mechanic had diagnosed as a fuel issue and plugged primary filter. We left
with a new Racor primary on the engine.

Made it to somewhere south of Miami (sailing, motor sailing, or motoring as
wind and weather dictated) when the engine stalled, with the appearance of a
plugged filter. We used all the spares, but could not keep the engine running.
Limped into Marathon. Had the fuel tank polished (Edd has the pictures, the
fuel did have a lot of crud and water in it) and left with a new stock of spare
filters. Made it almost to the channel under the 9 mile bridge when the engine
stalled again. WTF?

Ultimately, the lift pump on the engine was heating up and shutting down. It
would cool down as we changed filters and reprimed and then run until it got
hot again. Diesel mechanic in Marathon replaced the lift pump and we made the
trip from the Keys to Venice with no problem… and I suspect Edd has had none
since. The only real difficulty we had about the repair was getting the pump
shipped in since there are no Beta or Kubota diesel shops in the Keys.

At one level, and in retrospect, I chide myself for not suspecting the lift
pump in the first place. I had exactly the same problem several years ago on
the Universal M35B in my 38 (I even carry a spare pump among my parts inventory
– and as the general rule would indicate, since I carry a spare I’ve never had
a second pump failure). Both my Universal and the Beta are based on Kubota
tractor engines. But mine had an electric lift pump and Edd’s is mechanical so
I failed to make the connection.

FWIW, I was told that the Kubota engine as modified by Beta uses a 3 or 5
micron secondary on the engine, and a 10 micron Racor primary. I suspect Edd
has a lifetime supply of the Racors on his boat.

David,

I wasn’t on board, but I think one was a precaution and the other because of a
stall-out.

All the best,

Edd

Hi Edd- How did you know you needed to change the filter twice on the trip
down? Were there symptoms or just being cautious? Dave

Bo,

Much will depend on how much you use your engine, how clean your tank is, and
the quality of fuel you are using.

When the Enterprise came down from New York, she was practically motoring the
entire time, adding many hours of engine use in three weeks. For that trip, the
filters were changed two times.

For normal use, like Josh, I have a fine raycor filter and change that maybe
once every several years - or if I can see notable clogging or the engine
stalls. The filter on the engine Itself I change once every three years or so.

I used to do oil changes and oil filter changes every fall before laying up for
the winter. Since there is no real layup season down here in Florida, I still
keep to my fall schedule.

My engine (Beta 30) came with a maintenance schedule based on engine hours. If
you have that for your engine, that should be an excellent guide.

All the best,

Edd

Hi everyone,

Just wondering, how often do you have to change diesel filters? or how do you
tell it is time to change?

Thank you,

Bo
