I know this is getting a lot off topic from C&C’s, but as we are all going
crazy locked up . . .

There is an interesting special on PBS, Nature TONIGHT on Pangolins . Be
interesting to see if they connect the link between Pangolins, Bats, and CV19 –

To try to answer that question I'll supply this quote and a link to its source
(John Hopkins University):

Carolyn Machamer, a cell biologist who specializes in coronaviruses, discusses
the latest research on the virus that causes COVID-19

By Samuel Volkin / Published March 20

According to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine,
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can live in the air and on surfaces
between several hours and several days. The study found that the virus is
viable for up to 72 hours on plastics, 48 hours on stainless steel, 24 hours on
cardboard, and 4 hours on copper. It is also detectable in the air for three
hours.

Carolyn Machamer, a professor of cell biology whose lab at the Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine has studied the basic biology of coronaviruses for years,
joined Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA candidate Samuel Volkin for a brief discussion of
these findings and what they mean for efforts to protect against spread of the
virus. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Volkin: According to this report, it sounds like the COVID-19 virus is
potentially living on surfaces for days. How worried should we be about our
risk of becoming infected simply by touching something an infected person was
in contact with days ago?

Machamer: What's getting a lot of press and is presented out of context is that
the virus can last on plastic for 72 hours—which sounds really scary. But
what's more important is the amount of the virus that remains. It's less than
0.1% of the starting virus material. Infection is theoretically possible but
unlikely at the levels remaining after a few days. People need to know this.

Fair enough, and this is one of the problems with getting quality news.

The underlying question I guess is, if you find the RNA, is it still viable,
i.e, can you contract the disease from it?

I consider the study released by the NE Journal of Medicine to be as
authoritative as any, and they indicate viable virus could be detected on
stainless for about 72 hours, though the virus titer was greatly reduced over
that time.

There are some additional studies out there, but I'm not seeing much in the way
of conflicting information.

So if we are going to be accurate:

SARS-COV-2 is an RNA virus that causes Covid 19 and the test uses the RNA from
the virus to test for its presence. It is very unlikely that there would be
any RNA around if it is not coming from virus. It is possible you might find
naked RNA without the rest of the virus, but unlikely, and that is the same for
all Covid-19 tests. When a patient tests positive, it means they are finding
RNA in the sample, not virus. There is presently no test for “live virus” as
there is no such thing as a living virus and no test for functional virus
except to infect cells in culture in a laboratory. Dave

Hey folks, please note that in the stories, they talk about RNA, not live virus

And the good news was the virus was found to have survived 17 days on surfaces
on one of the cruise ships that had the issue (not sure which one), but instead
of living for hours, they are now saying it lives for days! YIKES.

That is not the only absurd aspect of the response to Covid 19. You can’t
access your boat nor can I go into my University office, which in both cases
there is no contact with other people. But I can go to the hardware store or
grocery store where you can’t help but encounter other people. That is the
situation in CT, anyway. Not logical or based on any science. Dave

That may be a state instruction. Talbot County is saying the same thing.

All the marinas in Kent County Maryland (Rock Hall, Tolchester, Worton Creek,
etc.) are closed for boat owners. The county instruction allow them to staff
with their own people if the maintain “social distancing”. So in at least some
cases you can’t work on your own boat but can pay them to do work.

USVI is closed to visitors too.
