So if we are going to be accurate:

SARS-COV-2 is an RNA virus that causes Covid 19 and the test uses the RNA from 
the virus to test for its presence.  It is very unlikely that there would be 
any RNA around if it is not coming from virus.  It is possible you might find 
naked RNA without the rest of the virus, but unlikely, and that is the same for 
all Covid-19 tests.  When a patient tests positive, it means they are finding 
RNA in the sample, not virus.  There is presently no test for “live virus” as 
there is no such thing as a living virus and no test for functional virus 
except to infect cells in culture in a laboratory.  Dave
