When I first got my 34R in 2002, it had a single solar fan in the forward
hatch. I considered adding opening hatches or dorades but dorades only work if
the wind is blowing and an open hatch needs to be closed when it rains. After
looking at newer sailboat designs at boat shows and marinas I noticed many
boats had opening ports over the galley with a solar fan installed in the
lenses. I decided against hatches and simply added three solar fans; one in
the head and one over each high point of the cabin. One wound up over the
galley and together, they do a great job keeping the boat smelling fresh. No
regrets. Well worth the effort and money. The fans came with intake and
exhaust blades but I found exhaust worked best for me so I keep them in that
mode yearround.
