Amsteel is extremely slippery AND hydrophobic. I think that your friend was referring to something that was not a soft shackle or one that was not properly made with the appropriate materials.
I make my own. I can't justify the x4 or x5 price tag associated with pre-made shackles. I can usually make mine of repurposed (used), or scrap Amsteel. If I have to buy then it is usually less than $1/ft and I use ~3 ft.
