In the US all that's required is a valid Ship Station license and a lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's permit. No testing required! The Ship Station license is good for 10 years and is non-transferable. If you want to use the ham bands in US or Canada you have to pass an exam. More info is available on the ARRL website. You have to see if your radio will operate on the ham bands. Jerry
