When we race upwind, the main trimmer is constantly playing the traveler sheet to optimize weather helm. I have tape marks on the steering wheel. Green = midships; yellow = 1/8 turn; red = 1/4 turn. The main trimmer is watching the puffs, feeling the pressure and watching the tape marks. If the red mark comes to the top of the wheel, he drops the traveler. As the puff eases and the red marks moves from the top, the traveler car is raised. The main trimmer, with his position on the windward coaming above the swivel cam arrangement for the traveler sheet can easily play the traveler. Up, down, up, down, constant adjustment. Touche' is NOT a "set and forget" racing program. The main trimmer's position on the windward coaming also places him very close to the helmperson. They are constantly communicating. The remainder of the crew is on the rail calling waves and puffs. When shorthanded, the helmsperson can easily trim the traveler from aft of the traveler from the windward side. If we need for the jib trimmer to play the jib, the main trimmer remains on the windward cockpit coaming but moves forward. The swivel cam cleat allows the main trimmer to still easily play the traveler. The jib trimmer moves low to the leeward side to play the headsail. The fore/aft weight distribution isn't affected adversely. Obviously, this is a good configuration for an end boom mainsheet system and a bridge deck traveler system. It may not be optimum for a cabin top traveler. Dennis C. Touche' 35-1 #83 Mandeville, LA
