I suppose the advantages/disadvantages are in the eye of the beholder. My boat
weighs about 20,000 pounds. The short-term weight of a person standing in the
companionway adjusting the main after tacking isn’t that big of a deal.

The real advantage to the windward sheeting traveler system is that someone
doesn’t need to move off the rail to uncleat the leeward to pull the traveler
up as you’re tacking. Assuming you already have someone on the low side
grinding the jib sheets, the last thing you want coming out of a tack is a lot
of weight down in the cockpit. Our boats don’t typically accelerate well when
at a high angle of heel.

On the 34 (like my current 42), the traveler and main sheet are located at the
companionway. This means someone needs to be dedicated to the position (that
is, the driver can’t handle it without leaving the wheel). If a crew member
must attend to the main any way, the traveler controls are right there and
easily operated. I did not see much benefit for the high price.

didn’t you find it convenient that you could always pull the car up, without
releasing the other control line? You save one hand in the process.

I had a windward sheeting car on my 34 and believe they’re overrated. Just my
two cents.

If you decide on Harken, go for the “windward sheeting” traveler car. As they
say in their ads, once you raced with one, you would never go back.

If you are cost conscious, go for Garhauer; there is hardly better value (not
to mention that they usually bend over backwards to accommodate your needs).
