Bruce and Nancy,

Rather than give a thumbs up or down on the merits of sailing a C&C 110 across
the Pacific I’ll point you to a voyage that good friends of ours did a year
ago on a “similar” sized and style boat, a 40’ J/120.

They left San Francisco for New Zealand via Honolulu and Tahiti to Auckland. I
followed their progress via Spot tracking and emails with the owners (their
kids took over the voyage from Hawaii to New Zealand; no-one older that 32
onboard…).

My impression is that they had a wonderful sail. There were no incidents or
problems. Downwind sailing primarily. Day after day of cruising. The usual
problems found when cruising with systems and gear.

As far as water-proof bulkheads are concerned, there are very few sailboats
cruising the oceans with them. Is it a good idea? Sure. But generally
safeguards such as a good life-raft, grab-bag and communications go a long way
towards mitigating problems in the event of a collision. If you want an extreme
example of a minimal boat crossing the ocean, follow Web Chiles’ log
(http://www.inthepresentsea.com/the_actual_site/webbchiles.htmll) of his
cruising in a ultralight Moore 24 solo. Not for the faint of heart.

A good weather routing service with up-to-date downloads combined with a
sat-phone would be very well worth the price. Good inspection and preparation
of your rigging, running rigging and mechanical systems would be good measures
prior to leaving. AIS? Absolutely.

Keep in mind that you will need carrying capacity for consumables and water.
The Pacific Ocean is large.

Best,
Dave Godwin
