David,

I’m not a huge fan of spraying lubricant down inside the cable sheathing as it
tends to only mask the problem rather than solve it. Teleflex engine control
cables are somewhat different than the control cables on bicycles and
motorcycles in that they use a stiff solid steel rod as the actuating mechanism
as opposed to a flexible twisted wire core. Between the core and plastic
external jacket is a wound steel sleeve that gives the jacket some strength.
The better cables also insert a Teflon sleeve in between the core and cover of
the cable and are generally self lubricating. If the cables are oriented in a
straight line, there is very little friction between the sheathing and the
inside cable core. But our cables make multiple bends on the routing between
engine controls and the engine/ transmission and wear occurs at the bends. The
cable jacket is more likely to wear INSIDE the cable where the cable bends than
the solid steel rod that moves back and forth. Unfortunately, you can’t look
inside the cable to see where the wear is occurring. Squirting some goop down
inside the cables also doesn’t solve the problem of corrosion within the cable
housing, it simply creates a slicker surface between two rusty or worn
components. I know what most of you are saying, “Aren’t the cables made with
stainless? Why would they rust?”. The answer is Yes but stainless steel in an
environment with no oxygen can still rust and corrode.
It is rare that the cables themselves break, but instead the common failure
points are the cable clamps, the cable clevis end in side the pedestal, or the
screw that connects the shift or throttle lever to the engine control shafts.
Any of the above will occur when you least want it to happen, such as pulling
into a dock in a 20kt crosswind.

I’d recommend avoiding a band aid fix and not waiting for the component to fail
to fix it.

Somewhere I picked up a spray can of Cable Lubricant (?Motorcycle shop, maybe).
I took off the binnacle and could reach down to spray onto the cable and gave
enough to trickle down inside the sheath. Seemed to free them up quite a bit so
have forgotten about changing out the cables for now. Simple, cheap and worth a
try. Cheers

Most of the control cables are replaceable with teleflex cables available at
many chandlers. I suggest removing the old ones first to get an idea of the
length. When you remove then make sure to pull a fish tape in their place for
easy reinstall. I needed to remove my steering pedestal in order to properly
access the cables. You might be able to jimmy them without this step. If you
do it is a great time to replace your steering chain and cable.

Hi everybody,

My gaz and shift control levers are becoming harder and harder to use on my C&C
29 (1984)

My wife is unable to use the shifting lever, too stiff.

Is there someting to do about it?

Did one of you change the cables?

I’m considering buying an ACTU Spinlock control and relocate thes controls
elsewhere.

Thanks for the help
