Erik, I tried to do it with the rudder in place by pressing out the bearing. The thing almost worked. I asked my mechanic to do it. He removed the tranny and slid the shaft forward - he said it was easier than dropping the rudder, and he got out all of the old transmission oil. I don't think you can screw it up, but you can waste a lot of time.
