Might be worth a shot.  I had a similar insurance experience with a truck.
Driving on the Interstate when I heard a bang and the cab filled with
smoke.  The truck went completely dead, the flashers wouldn't even work.
Managed to coast to the shoulder and get it towed to a garage.

Turns out the alternator voltage spiked and destroyed much of the
electrical system, $5500 worth of damage.  Insurance paid for all except
alternator and deductible under the comprehensive portion of the policy.
