My guess is you have to replace the cable.

The earlier cables may have been made by Morse, now will be
replaced by Teleflex. You will need to measure the overall length,
say 8', and confirm that both ends use a clamp style connection.

This is an example of a clamp that may be on the transmission side:

In the 1" tube there will be another clamp.

The cables come in different sizes, such as Teleflex 3300 - 4300 - 6400 series.
To see which cable to use you will need to find out the thread size of the
existing clevis.

The clevis looks like this and there should be one on each end of the cable:

http://www.westmarine.com/teleflex--4300-cable-system-parts--P006_184_003_509

The 3300 series uses a  10 - 32 threaded end.
The 4300 series uses a  1/4 - 28 threaded end.
The 6400 series uses a  5/16 - 24 threaded end.

My old engine was a Yanmar 2gm. " The shiftier was stiff on this engine as
well"
I installed the new 2GM20F and the same problem " Stiff shiftier"

My shift cable is in the Stainless steal 1/2" leg and not inside the
binnacle.
Thanks for your help I'm not sure which cable to buy? The red cable or find
a black one like is in the boat now? The one in the boat is more heave
duty.
