Hi Lee:
If your dripless stuffing box is dripping you may want to think about
how old it is. Mine leaked after about fifteen years and a thousand or
so hours of use. I questioned the manufacture who stated the black
accordian shaped bellows should be replaced every seven years. You can
get away for a while with pushing the metal collar back on the shaft to
compress the bellows, but eventually the bellows has no spring left, so
can't seal properly.
Changing the bellows on my 35-1 every seven, or so, years would be a
pain, so I decided to go back to the original stuffing box of 1973 and
used a black graphite packing. It stops the water quite well and I have
peace of mind. Getting the right tension on the stuffing box gland is
tricky and I can't get it just right; hence the reason why, I think, the
shaft seemed to turn easier with the dripless seal.
