Thanks Dwight, but on mine there is an appearance of a bulkhead on the floor
between said drain and the aft main bilge which would prevent flow. Anybody
else have the same feature.

Cheers!

On my 35MKII the shower pan drains aft into the main bilge...no pump on the
shower drain, water just flows back into the main bilge and is pumped out from
there

So guys,

I'm back on line. I need to catch up, but here are a few questions for other
35-2 owners

Exactly how is the shower bilge drained?

In my boat, there is a a rectangular pan which has a 3"round indentation in one
corner but no visible means of what goes there. Then under the sink in the
head on the outside there are 2 electical switches, one push pull and one
momentary, neither of which are connected to a pump.

The pump does not exist, but forward of the fwd head bulkhead, there is a
5/8"ID hose which goes up to a thru hull on the port side.

So, I surmise that some kind of pump sucks the water out of the shower bilge
and kicks it overboard out through the port side. Is this what happens?

If that is the case, where should the hose run from that shower bilge?

More questions later.

Guess I'm in a weird area. Louisiana is fairly litigious but I've never been
asked for insurance for dockage or racing. For racing, a valid PHRF
certificate is all I've been asked for. We occasionally have to sign a
liability waiver for some races.

I have been asked for it for dockage in Florida.

I think the race organizers around here think that the USSailing coverage is

I always found it quite interesting that insured boats were covered by their
policies while "racing". From my experience racing seemed a higher risk
activity for collisions that at least might rate a higher premium for special
coverage for "racing" compared to the premiums for boats that did not race, but
I don't think that is the case yet.

Alex,

It sounds similar to how my 37+ is set up. A self priming pump is mounted
behind the bulkhead, behind the toilet. It sucks via a sump strainer and
discharges (as you describe) out the side of the boat. The push/pull switch
allows for starting and stopping the pump from within the shower.

I considered drilling a hole to allow direct drainage to the bildge but have
hesitated because of the possibility of clogging the bildge.

I had to replace the dewatering pump last year and just used a 4.0 gpm wash
down pump that WM had on sale. One of those types that has 3 diaphragm
chambers that are activated in rapid sequence by a rotating wobble plate.
They get used alot for fresh water pressure pumps but are good for this too
because they are self priming and have good lift.

If you manage to get a hose connected to the underside of the shower drain
please let me know how. On my 35 MKII it seems impossible to do that without
tearing up some fiberglass in or around the shower basin or maybe the outlet
underneath might be accessible when the mast and mast step are removed but it
would still be a tight fit.that is why my shower drains to the bilge.in my case
that isn't bad because I think the soapy shower water sloshing around helps to
keep the bilge clean and since I add antibacterial Mr. Clean
(1/2 bottle) to the bilge regularly and occasionally (maybe 3 times) during the
summer season I also add about a cup of Javex to the bilge to keep bacterial
growth (and resultant smells) down. Works great for me and besides I don't see
an easy alternative anyway.

A few weeks ago, someone on this list gave a schedule of his planned talks at
West Marine stores around the country. I recorded the date for one at
Fairhaven, MA as yesterday afternoon, but when I went there, they said they had
had a lecture in the morning, not afternoon, and it was on bottom paint.
Obviously I got the date wrong.

Could the person who posted that schedule post it again? Especially if a visit
to the Fairhaven West Marine store is still planned.

I forgot to mention that on my 37+ the "drain pan" is fully covered by a teak
floor grate. So you never actually see the hose or the suction
pickup/strainer/check valve. There is a small recess in the pan where the
pickup goes. If I don't pump then the pan will hold about 2 gallons before the
water comes above the teak grate. The hole that the suction hose goes through
acts kinda like a high level overflow to the bildge so water doesn't spill into
the rest of the head.

Similar to Ken's suggestion you might find a bildge suction that would fit. If
needed you could add one of those inline check valves just after the pickup.

I put a trigger sprayer similar to a sink sprayer on the showerhead so that I
can really cut down on the water usage. Now I have to be careful not to forget
to shut off the water when I'm done.

Hi Steve,
Interesting observation.

Here off New Jersey, we see small groups of dolphins pretty regularly and never
tire of watching them play.

My favorite "wildlife" experience only happened once. I was running the boat
along Cape May at the end of the season, late October and came upon hundreds of
Northern Gannets migrate south. I had to use google after my trip to identify
the birds. They are about three times the size of our seagulls with 6 foot
wings. One would swoop low along the sea surface for a 100 yards then hover at
about 15ft for a while and then dive underwater where they disappeared for 30
secs or so and then pop up and sit on the surface to rest for a few minutes and
repeat. Amazing and beautiful birds I haven't seen since.

Vancouver is beautiful. I have friends out there and i've gone out on three
trips. I rode my motorcycle out there the second time so I could get a close up
view of the mountains along the way, best thing I ever did. I would move there
in a heartbeat if I could find work. I'de totally live on a boat, the housing
is ridiculous.

I'm jealous of all you guys that actually get to see marine life when you take
the boat out. Seals? Dolphins? Otters? Oh really?!? Orcas for chrissakes.
Someone please tell me they've been out in the channel when the superpod came
through? A friend's mom was out in a kayak when they came through once! I get
excited when I'm the first one at the club in the morning and I get to free the
trapped raccoon out of our club's garbage bin. They go in there and get stuck,
like clockwork. We keep a 2x4 on hand so that we can lower it in and they can
use it like a ramp. "Wildlife!"

Wow, 1.36 million.

Subject: Stus-List lecture on Safety at Sea?

A few weeks ago, someone on this list gave a schedule of his planned talks at
West Marine stores around the country. I recorded the date for one at
Fairhaven, MA as yesterday afternoon, but when I went there, they said they had
had a lecture in the morning, not afternoon, and it was on bottom paint.
Obviously I got the date wrong.

Could the person who posted that schedule post it again? Especially if a visit
to the Fairhaven West Marine store is still planned.
