Three rings minimum, with joints spaced 120 degrees apart.

I think mine used four. But now I have an inner & outer of regular shaft packing (flax & tallow) with a magic concoction dripless compound called SBS #3 (stuffing box seal) which is a "self-lubricating packing that requires no sealing water". It looks like graphite and Teflon fibres with white grease, tallow and a some small lead balls.

I can't remember where I got it... maybe a salesman?

‎Hello everyone,

I have a c&c 35 mk I and am repacking my stuffing box. I have the original A4 with the original shaft
 I dug 2 loops of flax out of the female nut.

Can someone advise if they have two or three loops of flax. Recommendations on type of flax is also appreciated.
