I second the Interlux Perfection option. As part of my extensive "Renovate the finish of the entire boat from the keel to the decks" project I am re-doing the boot stripe with Perfection in the bright red color. It looks like it's going to be super durable, it's "epoxy like" when it hardens.
Perfection is not easy to apply until you get the hang of it. Given the right consistency it will in fact lay with a mirror smooth finish even when you brush. The thing is the consistency is very sensitive to the ambient temperature. Around 65- 70 Farenheit is ideal, after that the thinner % is a bit of a crap shoot. A couple days ago I was getting ready to apply my 3rd coat. It was around 10:45 am and the sun was rising quickly.. I ran a test till of brushing vs roll and tip and with / without thinner until around 11:15 am. The brushed no thinner test coat looked best on the test material. By the time I finished all my tests and got everything ready to actually paint the stripe it was closer to 11:45 / noon and by then It appears it was a bit too hot and the paint did not lay quite as well as the test and went on a bit too thick.. So I'm re-sending (At least it's easy to sand) and I'll try to hit it around 9:00 am before the sun is high and give me a couple hours of cooler and more consistent temp to give it a chance to lay better.. Evenings are out as the dew is supposed to cloud the finish.. Oh and one more thing.. The red does not cover very well color wise. Even if I was ready to call it quits at 3 coats (Over an original darker red) 4 will definitely improve the color.. Perhaps it will be better on the other side when I've got the temp / consistency equation down and get a more even application of paint. On the plus side it only takes about 50 ml of paint to do a stripe on one side and it's easy to sand when obsessing over the finish / color.. I've tried the roll / tip technique, but it seems I'm getting less brush marks by brushing it.. Go figure. -Francois 1990 C&C 34+ "Take Five" Lake Lanier, Georgia
