Gary,
Between Quincy Bay and Boston Harbor is the Long Island Bridge which has plenty of height. Both areas are very protected by the Boston Harbor Islands, Hull a neck that connects with the south shore and Deer Island a neck attaching to Winthrop, the north end of the harbor and just opposite Logan airport. The toughest thing to get used to in Boston Harbor is ducking as the plane approach the runway. Not really a danger but if you've never had a jumbo jet landing directly overhead it can be a bit of a surprise. With respect to racing small boats Quincy Bay and Boston Harbor are totally different worlds. Different fleets and different people. Like any other harbor or narrowing of waterways especially when racing you need to be aware of the tides and play them as best you can. When racing you'll all be subjected to the same tides anyway. The tides and currents are somewhat less in Quincy Bay but local knowledge is important and it'll be really hard to compete with the locals. Everything is relative. I never think of Boston having significant tides or currents but that's only because I've been sailing here for a long time. Now Maine, those are tides and currents! If you can take a day when you're up here and sail out of the harbor on Mass Bay up to Marblehead you'll really enjoy that. It's a beautiful ~3-4 hour sail. Stay the night on the boat in Marblehead, eat and drink well and enjoy one of the best sailing towns on the east coast. Enjoy it, Dave C&C 35 MK III Sailtaire From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Gary Nylander Sent: Friday, January 10, 2014 1:27 PM To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Stus-List Boston I have been invited to join some friends in August to visit Boston Harbor - and to drive their Thunderbird (boat - 26 feet) at the Nationals. Not wanting to be a total goof, I would like to know as much as possible about the area - Quincy Bay) beforehand. Are tide/current charts available? I understand they have pretty good tides up there... How about wind off/on shore, etc. Any guidance would be appreciated - sources of info as well. Thanks in advance. Gary from the Chesapeake, where we have little tide and moderate currents....
