I was working on a Catalina a few years back (see, I managed a tie-in with the earlier thread about Catalinas…) that had the same issue with the nav station desktop. I installed one of these after getting my hand smacked a few times:
http://www.rockler.com/adjustable-lid-support It holds the lid open, and when you go to close it, it slowly lowers the top. Nice.
