I have been delivery skipper or race crew on several Hawaii / West coast trips on boats with Volvo diesel auxiliary engines. We experienced significant engine failures on two of the trips. In both cases the engines had lotsa hours and poor preventative maintenance. IIRC it was broken valve springs and rocker arms.
Concerns regards the price of parts is well founded however a well installed and maintained Volvo diesel aux engine is likely to perform about the same as all the other aux engine choices. IIRC there have been some issues with Volvo saildrives but I do not have any personal experience. If the Bendy-toy 331 has been well maintained and the survey finds no particular engine issues (for a small amount of $$ an engine oil analysis is a good idea) I would not dis-qualify it for having a Volvo. I am looking into a larger boat purchase and found a Beneteau 331 with Volvo engine. I would be interested in hearing opinions about these engines especially in Toronto area - availability of decent service, parts, etc. Will appreciate all opinions including remarks about "cata-bene-huntalinas" :) Marek C&C 24 "Emilie" Hamilton Harbour, ON
