Agree. The first America Cup contenders were schooners, then sloops of 120 ft, sponsored by the rich elite with names such as Vanderbuilt, JP Morgan, Sir Thomas Lipton.
The 12 meter yachts used after WWII were less expensive than the big J-boats but the cup was never within reach of the average sailor. It's always been a rich man's sport. I know Nat Herreschoff would approve of the foiling catamarans in carbon fiber. He always liked trying new things. He raced his own 20' catamaran in the 1880 or 1890's. I may be totally wrong, but i think that Team New Zealand in the AC 34 is the first challenger / defender to have significant government sponsorship! -- Jonathan Indigo C&C 35III SOUTHPORT CT On Sep 15, 2013, at 18:40, "Jack Brennan" <jackbren...@bellsouth.net> wrote: > They should rename it the Billionaire's Cup. > > It's now about wealthy people's egos, not national pride. > > Jack Brennan > Former C&C 25 > Shanachie, 1974 Bristol 30 > Tierra Verde, Fl. > > -----Original Message----- From: Tim Goodyear > Sent: Sunday, September 15, 2013 6:10 PM > To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com > Subject: Re: Stus-List americas cup plusses > > On the other hand, that last race was quite the show! > > On Sep 15, 2013, at 5:35 PM, Colin Kilgour <charliekilo...@gmail.com> wrote: > >> Two Kiwi Skippers? >> >> Surely you mean one Kiwi and one Aussie. >> >> And do you also mean to tell me that Ben Ainslie doesn't hail from Iowa >> either? >> >> Man, I'm disillusioned. >> >> Cheers >> Colin >> >> >> >> >> >> On 9/15/13, David Knecht <davidakne...@gmail.com> wrote: >>> >>> On Sep 14, 2013, at 3:22 PM, Chuck S <cscheaf...@comcast.net> wrote: >>> >>>> For me the Americas Cup lost the most apeal when they alowed crews to be >>>> multinationals. >>> This is my big problem and made me lose interest.
