Yes, but Ellison made it so expensive that mere multimillionaires could not
afford to compete this year, reducing the field to I think four and changing
the nature of the race.
New Zealand had to kick in money so that it could have an entry in what is
obviously an important competition in that nation of sailors.

I think we are forgetting that the competition is named after a yacht - not
the country!! and both the defenders and challengers have almost always been
funded by extremely wealthy individuals. I may be totally wrong, but i think
that Team New Zealand in the AC 34 is the first challenger / defender to
have significant government sponsorship!

They should rename it the Billionaire's Cup.
It's now about wealthy people's egos, not national pride.

On the other hand, that last race was quite the show!

Two Kiwi Skippers?
Surely you mean one Kiwi and one Aussie.
And do you also mean to tell me that Ben Ainslie doesn't hail from Iowa
either?
Man, I'm disillusioned.

This is my big problem and made me lose interest. Watching two Kiwi
skippers race against each other for the "Americas Cup" is an oxymoron.
What used to be the added intestest was the national pride associated
with
American technology and skill pitted against that from other countries
(like
the Olympics and most all other international competition). This is
Formula

it is inherently less interesting to me.
The Plusses still outweigh the negatives.
Better camera work on the boats, on the water and from helicopters
Better TV coverage, on at a reasonable hour
Better commentating, more knowledgable sailors instead of talking heads
Better graphics to show boat name, speed, etc.
Longer series, with many more races.
