Hank,
thanks for your post. I bought a 1985 LF 39 from the estate of Doug James,
Erie, PA, the original owner, 2 years ago. From his notes and paperwork left
on board, it appears that he paid approximately $120,920. He was also a C&C
Dealer and owner of Lund Boat Works. I have the original invoice from Bierig
Sailmakers, Erie, that show 3 sails( a main and (2) 155 genoas) for $3,989. I
think what I have is the original sails.

In C&C's heyday of the 70's and early 80's the boats were considered to be at
the upper end of both the quality and price scale. On a scale of 1 to 10, C&C
was generally considered an 8 to 9 with boats like Swan and Hinkley at a solid
10.

The quality was there to justify the price and the boat buyer knew that and
could see it. i.e. a very good value for the buck. (the exchange rate helped
a lot too) The other key was good looks combined with excellent performance.
C&C's simply looked good, looked fast and were both underway. The pedigree of
speed was established from around the buoys at the local club to the SORC. And
on top of that, you could throw on the rolly furly and take the family for the
summer cruise in a comfortable boat with nice amenities.

They were at the right time, in the right place and with the right product to
succeed and that is why, for a number of years, they were the largest sailing
yacht manufacturer in the world.

  My 1981 C&C 30 MK1 675M81E

with asymmetrical cursing spinnaker with all associated gear whisker pole,
Boom mount and track. Was $19,685.00
It was sailed to South Carolina in the mid spring of 1982.
Can anybody tell me what the "E" in the VIN # was for?

The earliest record I have for Calypso is $110,000 as a first mortgage on
April 28th 1971. In 1974, as “Arieto” the boat was listed for $97,000. I do
not have any record of the purchase prices for its sales in the Great Lakes
region. (Twice sold, once to be renamed “Phantom” and again to be “Esta Es”.)

I suspect the 1971 mortgage amount included new sails and electronics as
the boat went on to win its class in the 1971 SORC. The documentation states
the boat was built in 1970 and commissioned in 1971. It is hull #1 of the
“Limited Edition” 43’s.

We purchased the boat in late 1998 for $65,000 needing upgrades to most
systems and rigging. The cost of upgrades so far is a closely guarded secret
to maintain domestic harmony in both owner’s household.

I know what a modern 30ish footer costs new, but what did our C&Cs cost
back in the 70's and 80's? Some of the brochures have that info but most don't.
How were C&Cs positioned price-wise compared to the competition?
      Just curious.
