Tragic story to say the least.
The PO commissioned the boat to sail in the Chicago Mac in 1974 and won
her class. The crew returned the boat home, the owner met them at his YC with
drinks, etc. Sat down in the cockpit proposed a toast to the crew and then
suffered a massive stroke. After the owner's stroke the boat was placed
in a heated warehouse for storage with the hopes that he would recover and
eventually sail the boat. The recovery options were slim so his wife decided
to sell the boat and I ran across her while actually looking at a Tartan 41
listed with the same broker.

I had sailed on a '72 model 39 (#3) that was in Savannah at the time and
really enjoyed the ride and the 39 is a much prettier boat than the Tartan
41 so the deal was done & I still own her.

Amazingly, 18 months after the boat was delivered to me the PO called, he
was on his way to FL and wanted to stop and take a look at Honey, I agreed,
we met had a nice lunch at our YC and complimented me on the new red
topsides. He said that he really regretted selling the boat, but knew that he
would never be in shape to race her and sadly I had to agree. He passed away
not long after our meeting.

Jack,

What is the back story on the prior owner only keeping it for 7 months?

the purchase price for my 39 TM (with diesel engine and Kenyon 300 wind
instruments, etc) was USD 54,200.00 delivered to the original owner in Mount
Clemons, MI on 6 April 1974. I bought the boat on 1 Dec 1974 for USD
53,000.00 complete including the broker's 10% commission plus USD 1,500.00 for
shipping for Savannah

Steve,
I don't have the original invoice right here in front of me, it's on the
boat, but I believe that my 1976 38' costs the previous owner right at 38K
as delivered. He didn't put a lot of options on it so that was pretty close
to the base price.

I know what a modern 30ish footer costs new, but what did our C&Cs cost
back in the 70's and 80's? Some of the brochures have that info but most
don't. How were C&Cs positioned price-wise compared to the competition?
Just curious.
