I completely agree. If a cable has been neglected for 20 years it should
have failed 10 years ago. Even brand new cables need to be properly
lubricated at the time of installation, and probably every year at
commissioning as a minimum schedule. Service the cables every time you
service your winches, and for essentially the same reasons. To remove
accumulated contaminants, and provide fresh, non-hardened lubricant to
all working surfaces. The "lube" on control cables from the factory is
intended to prevent rust between the time of manufacture and the time of
installation. The type of lubricant is important, too. The wrong lube
will attract dirt and crud that will be worked through the length of the
cable housing by the back and forth of the cable. It gradually forms a
sludge. That's why the flushing type pressure lube gizmo I mentioned is
so popular with motocross and desert enduro motorcycle racers.

Most of our boats are at least 20 years old. A new cable is a lot more reliable
than an old resuscitated one. Generally if a cable is stiff, it has rusted
internally and should be replaced.
