Agreed. My throttle cable got harder to use and then it split out the side!
The casing (spiral wound) just came apart and the innards came out. Duct
tape fixed it for the short term, but a new cable was called for.
Not expensive - save yourself a second trial - the hardest part was getting
the pedestal apart to replace it.

Most of our boats are at least 20 years old. A new cable is a lot more
reliable than an old resuscitated one. Generally if a cable is stiff, it
has rusted internally and should be replaced.
