Fear of unavailable parts or expensive repairs?
Lost confidence in the boat and thinking NFW am I going across an ocean or a
part of one again in this thing?

I get the equipment failure, but when you're at sea and you need to get to
shore... take your easiest route. For him, it would have been to continue to
BDA. Instead, he turned back into a crappy forecast.
I don't mean to second guess guys that are currently out there, but I can't
help but wonder if the guy's getting bad advice (or none at all).
My fear - and suspicion - is that he had a breakage of some kind. Then,
realizing that he either couldn't or didn't want to complete the second leg,
opted to turn around and go home. And that's cool -- except that he's now
single-handed, away from the fleet, and sailing into a crap forecast. Better,
imo, to get to BDA safely. Get some rest, and then worry about repairs and the
return trip at that point.
Odds are he'll be OK, but he's likely not having much fun out there right now.

That's my $0.02 as someone with 8 (and counting) Bermuda passages under my belt.

Cheers,
Colin

He had some sort of equipment failure. He is sailing under a jury rig. CG
flew out to check on him.

Looks like the C&C 35 and 41 finished 1 and 2 in their classes.

I hope the Marion-Bermuda boats have better weather than Annapolis/Newport and
the Bermuda 1-2.

Next Thursday I fly to Bermuda to do a delivery back here, so I'm watching the
forecast.

Also, there's a boat that got half way there and then turned around. Now he's
heading into more crap weather. If he'd have kept going, he'd be in the clear
weatherwise. Instead, he's going to have to deal with more big winds... and a
stream crossing.
I don't get it.

Yes. Apparently it is the second failure on that model. Back to the drawing
board!

Did you see that a boat was abandoned?

A Columbia Carbon 32. Owner said he thought the keel was going to
fall off, so he jumped onto an HR49 (where the keels are quite a bit
more substantial)

Not particularly good press for a new sportboat design.

Thankfully, everyone's safe.
