It sounds like there may be a bit of confusion here. Several boats turned around (an open 40, a Pearson wanderer, and one more) and, one -- the Carbon- columbia, was abandoned when it seemed that the keel was falling off (fair enough excuse in my book!). Dan, the guy that headed north to get out of the stream, on Nirari knows what he is doing but for several days it looked like his boat was sailing itself/drifting to the north with the stream. It was good to hear that he was still on board. The blog says: "Dan says he has sail issues but he is not in distress and can sail. He has to jury rig his sails for a direction and he chose going North to get out of the Gulf Stream." Whether or not he made the best decision we'll never know but I bet sailing through the stream under challenging conditions without easy control of the sails would suck. And damn good for him for staying with the boat!
