Ditto in Florida with 55-foot bridges and shallow ICW.
But, you know what, with a C&C 40, there is no reason for you to be motoring
down the ICW in Florida. You should be out on the ocean. Major ports allow
you plenty of opportunities to stop and see the sights.
I've always marveled at seeing these huge cruising boats motoring down the
ICW in South Florida on a perfect day, when I'm heading out to sea in a 25-
or 30-foot sailboat.

Randall,
I can't comment on things in the Chesapeake area but the NC ICW from Norfolk
to Morehead is manageable with a 7' draft. I brought my boat (C&C 38 w/ 6'1"
draft) down last year and never saw less than 10 feet in the channel. The
last bridge before Belhaven (Wilkinson bridge) is a little low at 64' but
that shouldn't be a problem either. Be careful if you run across the
tug/barges from PCS, they are drawing a lot of water when loaded and are not
able to give room in the narrower part of the ditches. PCS is a big
phosphate plant on the Pamlico river and their barges run regularly to the
port at Morehead. On the good side, the bottom in our area is best described
as "chocolate pudding" and is fairly easy to get off if you do find yourself
in it. While that draft will not be a problem in the Morehead City/Beaufort
area, you will be severely restricted in other parts of our area. The Neuse
River doesn't really have any marinas that can reliably accommodate that
draft. Almost all of them can when the wind blows the water in, but that
takes a NE wind and the prevailing wind is SW which will do the opposite.

I am new to this board. I am looking hard at a 40 C&C. She comes with the
tall mast and a 7' draft, and surveys very well. She will be berthed in
the Annapolis area. I work in Annapolis a couple of weeks out of the year
and am looking for a live aboard that I can sail.
I am hearing mixed signals about that draft. How hard will a 7' draft
be
in that area? I have a home in Morehead City, NC. How difficult will
that
draft be in the ICW? I know I will have to pay attention to the charts
and
depth meter, but is it an impossible issue or just requires greater
attention.
I am willing to admit that I have a boat crush on her.
Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Paul, Good buy it sounds like... My C&C 30MK1 are getting to know each
other very now. Getting a new boat well new older boat is quite an
experience. You helped me out on some post in the past, as I was learning
the layout and handling of my boat. Thanks for that. I have seen the
Tangerine on U-Tube titled "C&C 24 close reaching" Great boat! Good luck
with the new big sister. Many years of happy times are sure to follow.
Cheers and have fun

I sold Tangerine, my C&C24, about a month ago. Yesterday I collected
Orange Crush, my new (old) C&C27 MkII. She's overall in fairly good
condition, a few mechanical issues and a fair bit of deferred
maintenance, but I'm pretty pleased with her. Sails very nicely, lots
more space, still has lovely lines and she's orange as well! I'm
thinking about changing her name, but it might grow on me. She's like
dating my ex-girlfriend's older sister :) I considered lots of other
boats, but in the end C&C still provided the best balance of quality,
cost, speed and looks.
Cheers,
Paul.
