I disconnected the shift cable at where it is attached to the transmission on my 2GM15 once and when I reconnected it I experienced erratic performance similar to what you describe. The issue was that the cable must be precisely positioned so that the movement of the shift lever is exactly as described in the YANMAR manual. After I adjusted the linkage to achieve the 30mm stroke specified by YANMAR, it worked perfectly again. Note the 30mm is for when you are using the bottom hole on the shift lever. If using the top hole the required throw is 35mm.
