I owned a 1980 36 for about 7 years. IIRC twice a year I would pump water proof grease into a zerk fitting on the rudder shaft’s bottom support (fiberglass tube) and I would spray lube the other contact surfaces. This lubrication reduced the extra friction and kept the force necessary to steer manageable.
If you commonly experience excessive weather helm some small tweaking of the mast set up, judicious use of the traveler, and keeping the sails trimmed on the flat side may be just enough to make upwind sailing fun again. It is good to hear from another 36 owner. This is my conclusion as well. From the start I noticed the hard steering in heavy air. My first thought was friction in the system so I removed the bushing/pulleys in the steering system and made up new ones with ball bearings. I didn't find much improvement so I made up a temporary for the cockpit floor that allowed me to take the vertical rudder load on a roller bearing rather than on teflon washers. The wheel was still stiff enough that my wife could not steer in 15+ knots while going upwind. My conclusion was that the rudder would have been much better had the shaft been placed a few inches further to the stern. My only solution was to reef and balance the helm.
