I guess I look at those guys with mixed feelings. Many times they are water hogs - we can't use their Bay! But, the last time I went through the Narrows from the North, I had to dodge an Island Packet who was using all of the middle of the narrow channel at the last turn..... ended up in the mud. A fishing boat coming out behind him came close enough to me to create a wake - with reverse and waves, I bounced off! So....
Had the same thing happen while aboard a friends Cat 380 at Knapps Narrows. The wing keel dug in good and we were looking for a long stay when a charter boat came out and put up about a five foot wake - bounced us right off. So, you takes the good with the bad when sailing in shallow areas. Apparently he just could not stand the idea of any kind of sailboat being anyplace on the river. I keep running into the boats with the little planes which keep the lines out about 50 feet from the boat on each side and 100 feet behind. The damn things are at water level and the little flags they are supposed to have hardly ever show.... Gotta give them a lot of room. We are sailing in a Star regatta over the weekend. They invited the sport boats - should be interesting! No, Penniless doesn't qualify as a sports boat, but the J-80 I race on does. Any C&Cers are welcome to meet up with us at either place. On another note, I was sailing on Sunday with a decent breeze and letting my 11 year old son steer. A fishing boat went by about 100 yards off yelling f-you and making obscene gestures. WTF?
