Dennis,

Along the East Coast from the Carolinas north, or maybe it’s just for offshore
and coastal coverage, it is typical for the insurance companies to specify a
location and date range that is the southernmost area you can take your boat
during Hurricane season and still have coverage or not incur additional
premiums.

Since you’d need to take your boat north to about Memphis, I’m presuming you
have some other type of provision for Hurricane season in your area.

My policy specifies 35 North (roughly Oriental NC) before October 1st. . But I
know from a local boat owner that Zurich Insurance specifies the Virginia/NC
state line before November 1st (which, I’m sure you know, is now the official
end of the season) and charges a 10% additional premium if you’re south of the
line and increases deductable to 20% of coverage in the event of damage in a
named storm before then.

The two marinas closest to me each get 2 or 3 boats a year than are brought
north and hauled around June to retain coverage during Hurricane season.

I suppose after Sandy that the insurance companies will move the line north to
about Boston when it comes time for renewal again.
