I appreciate the info and pics regarding the C&C 24 keel bolts. I am going to look into having a lift point fabricated for my boat.

Thanks,

Hi Chuck
Can you send me the pic? I'd be interested in a look. I would agree
that the mast step area is not C&C's best work, thankfully it is an
otherwise awesome boat.

I have read several list-ers reference Rob Ball, and a connection to
this list somewhere. Has he been asked his opinion about any creative
solution to this? Or was this not a design issue, but an 'on the
manufacturing floor' issue? If you say the limber holes solution was
doable...I may give that a try. Unfortunately for my garage storage
capacity, a Harbor Freight is way too close to me here.
Looking at the pic I tried to send, do you guys have the same
situation/position of the egg-crate voids relative to the
bulkhead/mast; where they are just peeking out from under the
bulkhead, barely accessible? Or have you found them different
locations for boats of different years/build locations?
Thanks...and Jake, we have a cabin on St Martins Point, and our family
has enjoyed the Straits of Mackinac for years. St Ignace, (and the new
Mackinac Grille deck overlooking the marina) says hello! Do you get
back often?

I had a look at my bilge on Saturday:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0djgghfk4odl20q/IMG_9375.JPG

The 3 aft bolts have nuts of 1&1/16" and the forward one is 3/4".
The point about cutting a hole in a coach roof is a valid one as all 4
bolts are under it.

A 6" hole was cut in the coach roof where the main lift entered to connect

Simple arrangement once it was constructed but knowing where the
'balancing point' is is the challenge. If you can find another C&C 24 with a similar arrangement, that would be very helpful. But keep in mind, every boat has different gear on board which might affect the 'balancing point'.

We have launched a j-80 and j-24 with single point straps. They hook under a rod which spans two of the keel bolts. A strap with a loop sewed in each end is looped under the rod and cinched on itself and the other end is used for the hoist hook. It makes it more stable if you have small lines to three places on the boat to keep it from moving around. On the 80, we use the mast and each winch. Fortunately on these boats, the companionway hatch opens up far enough that we don't need any extra holes.

I guess the biggest part for you is to find the balance point.

Updating the Photo Album is going to be pretty slow for a while due to an unfortunate incident.

Gladys and I were away for a couple of nights and during that time, our house was broken into. We are still trying to determine what is missing but so far we have estimated close to $10,000 worth. My desktop computer, flat screen monitor, and accessories are gone ? and almost all the software related to the Photo Album. All of the software and patterns for the decals, etc. is gone forever ? at least they left the vinyl cutting machine.

Fortunately the culprits did not value Gladys? $8,000 worth of computerized embroidery machines and just left them alone. Mind you they broke one hoop for doing the hats and it is close to $100.

They found every drop of alcohol in the house including the ?bucket of booze? I won at Christmas time. I had a collection of 15 limited edition HO electric steam engines and every one is gone and will never be replaced or seen again.

We had security in place and it was by-passed. They took the bulbs out the motion detection system, broke the door window and crawled in to remove a security bar preventing the door from opening.

Sorry for the long blog ? short part is we will be back up and running once the insurance companies decided on what value they are putting on the items.

FWIW ? don?t assume your house, car or boat is secure. Take every precaution you can and even then it will not be enough.

Our hearts and prayers go to you both at this most distressing time. The good news is you are both safe and unharmed. The bad news is much of your work efforts dedication and stuff are lost or compromised. The good news is you have lots and lots of friends on this site to help you rebuild J

At the risk of repeating what you may already know, I offer a few thoughts:

1) Notify everyone you can about the break in. Police of course, but also all your financial institutions ? especially credit cards. Identity theft is a real threat in this instance, so suggest you notify all credit bureaus so someone else can not open an account in your name.

2) Did you have any back up routine in play for your files? I learned a long time ago the value of daily backups for my old business and certainly recommend that for everyone on this list. If so that should be a big help in recovering data files.

3) Do you need help obtaining replacement computer hardware and software? Just holler!!!!

We all could very easily be in your shoes ? but you have all of us to help rebuild

Joel,

I started drilling through the stringer, forward of the mast. I'm trying to
get to the small boxed in area in front of the head door. So far, the
stringer seems to be solid. I'm in about an inch so far. My blasted 90
degree drill attachment broke. It was cheap and from a local national tool
store known for selling cheap Chinese tools. I now need to procure a new
attachment or find a shorter drill. I'll figure it out. My air drill is
shorter, but is low on torque. I bet I have a corded drill that will fit in
there.

I broke one of them too! I used a flexible extension. I didn't go forward
of the mast, but where I drilled was only about 1/2 thick. Stubby bits
from HF saved the day.
