Bad connections and deviations above 3 can screw it up, that was a problem on mine anyway.I seem to recall 5 wires from the fluxgate compass at the control head and I believe the ground wire was the culprit.I also had higher than 3 or deviation check but I finally got that right

Any chance the bilge pump is coming on and screwing it up? I can't think of anything else close unless you have an electric head. The center of the boat has less motion. For motoring in flat seas, it shouldn't make a difference. I will try calibrating it again this spring. All the wiring it clean and tight, but worth rechecking too. You can find the manual on the Ray website. Mine is in the wet locker on the recommendation of Chef Dave. There aren't any other wires running close to it. Far enough from the engine and control panel too. It doesn't malfunction often, but when it does you need to be there to correct it. Or maybe the wiring is experiencing a surge from a power source? Besides many hours of sailing and motoring a narrow ICW channel, I made at least seven 12 to 13 hour trips using our ST 4000plus and never experienced that problem.
