Since the original anodised finish consists of dye (and pigment?) adhering to
oxide formed on the surface of the aluminum, a permanent black magic marker
might help to restore some of the colour. The only tricky thing might be if you
were to follow this with a wax product that uses alcohol as a solvent, since
that is the solvent used in the permanent magic markers. Some wax products use
petroleum distillates which will not dissolve alcohol soluble dyes, and
therefore would not affect a magic marker touch up. It would be easy enough to
try anyway.

No idea if you can wax over Penetrol.

Sounds like time for a test.

I just went out to the storage and found some Mother's Back to Black auto trim
polish. I put that and some Meguiar's Premium Marine Wax in my truck. Maybe
I'll give them a shot next week. Since I painted the boat, I don't need the wax
anymore. Might as well try it on the toerail.

Dennis,
A fellow C&C owner near me has the same year boat as mine but my toe rails are
faded and his look new. He told me he waxed them to stop the black streaks
running down the side of the hull. Wouldn't say what kind of wax, but his
looked like they were freshly and professionally painted. The automotive black
trim polish might work? I also tried Penetrol but it didn't last long and I got
streaks on the hull.

Can you wax over penetrol?

Rick,

I used Penetrol for a while. Just wipe it on. Improves the looks for 2-4
months.

Been tempted to try black shoe polish or one of the automotive "black" trim
polishes.

Some time ago there was a discussion about improving the appearance of our
black anodized aluminum toerails after they have been faded by sun, salt, and
use. I recall that several folks used some sort of liquid, commonly used as a
lubricant IIRC, that would enhance the black and make the toe rails shiny for
at least a couple of months.

I’ve lately decided that I’d like to improve the cosmetics of the toe rails on
Imzadi.

Can someone refresh my memory on the name of the product recommended, and
perhaps point me to a source?
