I ran Calypso's binnacle mounted chartplotter/radar repeater display cables inside the SS tube to reduce the chance of interference. Also ran the B&G autopilot and multifunction instrument display cables through the tubes.
I checked the compass for display induced deviation on several courses and could not detect any. The display is a Raytheon RL70 "Pathfinder" and is mounted on a Seaview Sail Pod rail and enclosure. After 10 years of use I am still satisfied with the cockpit mounted set up however I now have to put my reading glasses on to make out the small details. I have mounted many units immediately adjacent to compasses with no apparent effect. However, I have always done a trial fit first to make sure. Be very careful of power leads near compasses. They can often be more problematic. Rich Knowles Indigo. Now I need some advice. I want to mount a small chartplotter (5" or 6" screen) at the binnacle, which would place it very close to my magnetic compass. Seems all the models on the market today - Raymarine, Garmin, Standard Horizon, etc - require a separation between the two, anywhere from 12" up to 3 ft. Makes it rather difficult to accomplish on a 30ft boat. I couldn't be the first sailor to face this dilemma, so any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!
