Andrew,
Like Joel, I am very happy with the 35-3. I primarily race on the Chesapeake. We have typically light air and use our 155% genoa most of the time. We reef at 14kts true. Sometimes we will reef and carry the #1 up to 16kts true, depending on the wind conditions and how many crew I have. With a lot of meat on the rail we can carry the #1 pretty well, but the grinders get a workout. Above 16kts we go right to the #3 jib. The boat is very competitive in light air. In medium winds, we hold our own. Once the wind gets near 20 kts, we can run with the best of them. Our #3 points very well. It's important to keep the boat on its feet and not try to run too much sail. It will only heel more and go slower. Singlehanded is very difficult. Our mainsheet in on a cabintop winch. When I singlehand on deliveries, I can manage it, but prefer to run just the #1 and sheet it to the secondary winches. The secondary winches were optional, but are right next to the wheel and very convenient for me. Another desired option is the inboard genoa tracks. I have them and use them in winds under 12kts. The boat points several degrees higher. They are short, only about 2' long, so they only work with the #1 genoa. They are an easy retrofit too. As with any boat purchase, a survey is very important. Pay particular attention to the cabin windows. They do need replacement now and then. They are glued in and are a bear to work with. The keel stub and keel should be carefully examined for cracks or gaps. The C&C smile is a gap between the too. Tightening up the keel bolts may cure it or it may need a full keel R&R, a much more expensive option. I'm looking to buy a sailboat in the mid 30' range, and the C&C 35 has caught my interest. What kind of speed does the boat have in light and medium winds up to about 20-25 kts? I assume already that this boat will point very well with a 6'+ keel. How easy is it to single hand the 35? Any advice for a 35-3 buyer? Thanks very much in advance.
