Hi Joel,

My first improvement to the outhaul was to lay down track & a Harken recirculating ball traveller car for the loose foot main clew. (Actual first improve was the loose footed main:) This takes care of most of the loading that Chuck cautions about, so the foot tension can be tweaked anytime.

The second improvement was 4:1 although the control line still runs along the outside of the boom and terminates about 4' from the gooseneck.

This year's improvement will be to go back to 2:1 at the car (boom end) and lead into the boom to a 3:1 system to net 6:1. It will exit the boom above the companionnway and belay at a Spinlock powercleat mounted on the boom.

I think the main advantage to this method is it gets one more control line away from the jungle at the goosneck & mast base & lead to aft. It also eliminates any possibility of an unfair lead in the boom --> aft belay transition. And still provides adjustability from the fore cockpit.

        Cheers, Russ

Learned the hardway that tensioning the sail controls is best done when the sail is unloaded.

Get setup to adjust, drop the traveller, and feather up into the wind, till the main is luffing, adjust and steer back onto course, retrim. Otherwise the sail gets stretched or rips or tears. In light winds, its no big deal, but once you're powered up in 12 kts apparent or more, you must take more precautions. Same with adjusting halyards. Today's line doesn't stretch and the sail is the weakest link, and the most expensive component to repair. Also, lube the outhaul car track and sail slides or slugs with SailKote, periodically. Another tip: Mark your boom, outhaul, halyard, so you know the max settings. If the lines and boom are marked, it's possible to tension these controls quickly during a tack.

BTW, We have a 6:1 purchase in the boom for the outhaul, and rarely need the winch.

My boat has no blocks internal to the boom, and a loose footed main. I replaced the wire with all rope, and I use a winch to adjust the outhaul. Even with the winch it's hard to adjust the outhaul in heavy air. Extra purchase with internal blocks would help, but would make easing the outhaul in light air more difficult. Perhaps a compromise - 2:1 purchase would be worth trying. I might try that using external blocks first.
