Have a look at the "tech corner" of the Harken on line catalogue where you
will find several outhaul systems. I want to run the outhaul line back to
the cockpit on my 33-2 (standard rig), so I'm going with the 5:1 internal
(looks to be close to what is there now) with the modification of running
the line forward to the gooseneck to a block on a tang, down to the mast
collar to another block then through a deck organizer back to a clutch.
I've noticed that the racing rig for the 33-2 has three sheaves at the
forward end (two for reefing lines and a center one for the outhaul)
unfortunately the standard rig only has two. Which brings me to this
question. Does anyone know who the manufacturer was for '86 vintage rigs?
I've looked at the Rig Rite site and the Kenyon sections look about right.
They have some interesting boom ends with three sheaves ---- of course that
would mean a new boom; etc, etc, etc. ($$$$)

Will wonders never cease. Perhaps that's a solution to Joel's question about
a bilge alarm - just put the EPIRB on the cabin sole near the mast and make
sure your MMSI number gives your cell phone number. No extra cost for boat
stuff, uses devices you already own, and puts your tax dollars to work. J
Actually, it started me thinking about something I noticed on the SPOT or
GEOS website. I think it's called the SPOT HUB, and in addition to the other
features, it connects to up to 4 wireless sensors and can send a message to
your cell phone for events like high bilge water, low voltage, or
unauthorized entry. I have no idea what it costs or how many lithium AA
batteries it would go through. But it sounds like a lot of technology in a
pretty manageable package.

Interesting story about this, a boat I was checking out at a Salvage dealer
ended up there because it started sinking at its dock. The owner was
actually driving in California when he got a call from the Coast Guard on
his cell phone because his EPRIB went off. Turns out they had launched his
boat in Georgia, and a thru hull or something was inadvertently left open,
got water 2 feet over the floorboards and set it off. So, possibly it COULD
be useful if you were on a ski trip!

I have often thought that there must be some way to rig up a cell phone to
raise the alarm in response to a monitored condition.
The cell phones I've had recently don't document any way to take external
control, but maybe some do.
It ought to be relatively easy to use a computer if the boat is in a marina
or anchorage with Wi-Fi coverage, assuming of course
that enough power is available.

While my teak is bleaching in the garage, I need some advice on my outhaul.
It currently runs to the front of the boom through 2 sheaves back into the
boom and exits the bottom of the boom between the vang and mainsheet where
there is a cam cleat. When I replace my clutches I could run it to the
base of the mast, through the new line organizer to the clutch.
It is the original wire and rope line. I plan to replace it with 3/8
StaySet.

I would definitely do that, Lewmar clutches work great.I have a similar
outhaul setup to what you plan on my 35 MKII.I think there is very little,
i.e. nothing, to be gained in using high price line. any 3/8 braid will work
just fine and whatever brand you choose you won't need to buy much to do
what you want to do so who cares.but you will appreciate the mod.lines lead
to the cockpit which work properly are always an advantage and IMHO
essential when single handing

Sounds like you're close. ?Mine is external to the boom but runs to a block
on a padeye on the aft side of the mast then to a stand up block on the deck
then to a Spinlock PowerCleat by the companionway. ?Functionally the same
set up as you describe.

Joel: Consensus seems to favor routing the line back to the cockpit and I
would certainly agree....You didn't mention the size of your boat, so I'm
not sure my system would be effective. My 38MKIIC boom has the outhaul line
exiting the underside of the boom near the mast and is routed down to a
block at the mast partner and then through a deck organizer to the
stopper.....one advantage of that is that you can use the winch located on
the cabin top to do adjustments when the load is too great for hand hauling.
However, the line that exits the mast is run into my boom through a 4
purchase set of blocks ...one double block up front and a second double one
further aft. That aft block has a becket that had the "wire" portion back
to exit out of the aft end of the boom for the outhaul shackle.....
I found that after 10 years of this arrangement, the boom kept getting
chewed up by the shackle when the outhaul was adjusted....so this year, I
replaced that portion of the outhaul with a 6-7' section of Amsteel gray
3/8" West marine for short money for a spectra like line......that line now
exits the aft end of the boom and is "tied directly to the main clew.
The system works very smoothly and the Amsteel line has more strength than
the original wire/rope configuration.....
Good luck with your conversion,
Ron C.

Ron,
Thanks. I should have mentioned its a 35/3. I don't think there are
blocks inside the boom, but I better check before I cut line.
I thought that was the way to go but wanted the confirmation.
