Ron,
I've inspected enough rigs to know that spreader bracket fasteners can be very
suspect. I've had to install new spreader bracket fasteners on several rigs
(including mine) due to loose or missing fasteners. I wouldn't recommend it
unless you know the fasteners are good.
Lifting a rig using a loop under the spreaders is a common practice. The loop
is around both spreader brackets and shares the load with a bit of tension and
friction with the mast. Jacking it up by placing a vertical board under a
single spreader bracket isn't nearly as strong. Spreader brackets and
fasteners are designed primarily for compression loads, not shear loads.
I'd consider rigging a gin pole and using the loop method. We've unstepped
masts by using a larger boat with a tall mast here. That works too but that's
for completely pulling the rig, not holding it up for hours or days while
someone works under the butt.

winch, loosened the rig and jacked it up a couple inches. I made a saddle
from a 2 x 4 to cradle the winch drum. This piece had the grain running
horizontally and rested on the vertical piece with scab pieces to attach it. I
was concerned that
cutting a saddle in the vertical piece would cause that piece to split.
