Dennis,Like Joe I'm working on the same issue.  If his boat is like mine, we
have no winches on the mast, but on the deck.Would the spreaders be sturdy
enough to use with wood props and jacks the same way?Actually, are the
spreaders strong enough to life the mast with line and gin pole?  The marina
operator told me NO.  I tried his method of the loop just below the spreaders
and then tied off at the gooseneck and darn near lost the mast.  It just
couldn't balance properly.  I finally used the spreaders, but wondered if I was
taking a risk.Any thoughts on spreader strength?RonWild CheriC&C 30-1STL

Joe,

First and foremost, BEFORE you do anything, measure EVERYTHING!  In particular,
measure the elevation of the existing mast step.  Even though it has sagged,
you will need to have a good idea where to build it to.

I have done minor work under the mast by jacking it up.  It's not for the faint
of heart.  You really need to make sure that you can do it safely.  All I was
doing was adding some shims under the mast.

I placed a platform of 2 x 4's on the deck, cut a 2 x 4 to span the vertical
gap between a car jack an a mast winch, loosened the rig and jacked it up a
couple inches.  I made a saddle from a 2 x 4 to cradle the winch drum.  This
piece had the grain running horizontally and rested on the vertical piece with
scab pieces to attach it.  I was concerned that
cutting a saddle in the vertical piece would cause that piece to split.

Howdy Listers,  I am new to the list and the new owner of a 1975 30 Mk 1.
Overall she is in decent shape with a fwc A4 that runs well.  Aside from
needing major  cleaning/polishing and lots of minor fixit stuff,  she has one
big ugly problem,  the mast step is sagging and needs to be rebuilt.  I have
read up on the repair at cncphotoalbum and it looks doable for a winter
project.    I wonder,  has anyone tried this repair without removing the mast
completely?  Perhaps jacking the mast up a few inches with some kind of rig
from inside the cabin or from on deck?  Any idea what the mast with rigging
would weigh?    It would save me the hassle of removing the mast and rigging,
not to mention the crane fee.  She is on the hard now.   Cheers,  Joe1975 30 Mk
