This happened to me a couple times. The first I think it was the clamp on the cable sheath on the tranny. The second time was last spring, and it was puzzling, as it was just getting sloppy, but it turned out that a #10 screw that attaches the end of the cable to the lever right under the compass was coming out! Simple fix, possibly disastrous possibilities.

The transmission linkage had stopped working for forward. Reverse works fine on the venerable Atomic-4. For forward I have to hop below, remove the companionway steps, and push the shift lever into forward. This got old, even with crew. When shifting to forward from the pedestal the shift cable bulges downward where it exits the sheath(?). This is a span of about 4 inches of cable and 5 inches of solid rod which connects to the shift lever. Very tight quarters. Seems like I'd have to remove the engine to replace the shift cable. Major bummer. I twisted the end of the cable 180 degrees and reattached it to the shift lever and that might have fixed it. I can now get it into the forward detent from the pedestal, but time will tell... Bob M Ox 33-1 Jax, FL
